This penguin is not being mistreated or forced into indentured servitude. According to various sources, the family found him tangled in a fishing line with serious injuries, nursed him back to health, and he refused to leave after recuperating. Apparently, he makes trips to the fish market by himself, and is— or was— well known in the area. (King Penguins can live up to 30 or more years in captivity. He was estimated to be 10-14 at the time of the video, which was made in the late ‘90s or early oughts, so there’s a good chance that he’s alive and thriving.)


Note to Sasha: Ok, I put the video of the penguin on my ‘blog.’ You are now my ‘blog correspondent.’ For the time being, I will pay you in pickled herring. Or, if you wish, you can choose to be paid in sweat equity.

That ‘business’ and ‘friendship’ are separate is a myth. Life is a dialectic of utility, pleasure, and virtue, and there are always trade-offs and repercussions in all realms based on how one conducts oneself— based on one’s intentions and actions.


After all, money is a man-made illusion, a game (‘the Money Game’), a grossly inadequate solution for quelling the power struggles that have beset humankind since inception, that typify all species in certain epochs of their development.


Still the way of the world: Most people say they will do what is right, and then usually do what is most convenient for them in terms of utility and pleasure. Will it ever be otherwise?
