In 1979, the West German pop disco band Dschinghis Khan, known for their flamboyant costumes, unhinged dance routines, and platitudinous lyrics, released Moscow, a paean to the city of Moscow in all its historical and contemporary glory.

The song proclaims:

Moscow / City of mystery / So full of history…

Drinking vodka all night long / Keeps you happy, makes you strong / Ho ho ho ho ho – hey!

Take Natasha in your arms / You’ll be captured by her charms…

Moscow, Moscow, throw your glasses at the wall / And good fortune to us all / Ho ho ho ho ho – hey!

This accompanying performance is certainly one of the kitschiest ever caught on video.

In 1980 the song was released in an English-language version. Australia’s Channel 7, madly enough, used the song as the theme to their television coverage of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. It became a big hit in the country, staying at #1 for six weeks.

BBC News – A rare glimpse of the cave of crystals

Mexico’s Cave of Crystals stunned geologists when it was first discovered in 2000. The underground chamber contains some of the largest natural crystals ever found – some of the selenite structures have grown to more than 10m long. . .

Show your support by liking FWIW on FB and/or G+, where I post something worthwhile (illuminating, informative, poetic, comic, tragic, usefully irreverent, captivatingly absurd) sporadically, whenever the mood strikes. . . You never know what you're going to get, but if I'm doing things right, whatever it is should ultimately enrich rather than detract from your life.
