For What It's Worth – a literary site

The literary site of Jason Bentsman and Contributors. Entertainment, illumination, edification

This penguin is not being mistreated or forced into indentured servitude. According to various sources, the family found him tangled in a fishing line with serious injuries, nursed him back to health, and he refused to leave after recuperating. Apparently, he makes trips to the fish market by himself, and is— or was— well known in the area. (King Penguins can live up to 30 or more years in captivity. He was estimated to be 10-14 at the time of the video, which was made in the late ‘90s or early oughts, so there’s a good chance that he’s alive and thriving.)

Note to Sasha
: Ok, I put the video of the penguin on my ‘blog.’ You are now my ‘blog correspondent.’ For the time being, I will pay you in pickled herring. Or, if you wish, you can choose to be paid in sweat equity.

It is a pleasure bringing you writings and other media through FWIW, but the site takes a lot of time to run (curate, write for, illustrate, code, share, etc)— sometimes a hundred plus hours a month— and incurs considerable costs to sustain. Donations from engaged readers like yourself are indispensable for it to continue running and remain Ad Free... If you derive any joy and value here, please consider becoming a Supporting Regular, with a modest recurring Monthly Donation of your choice, between a cup of tea and a dinner. (Note: You don’t actually need a PayPal account; just use any credit or debit card and click through.)

Or you can make a One-time or Recurring donation in Any Amount of your choice:

In 1979, the West German pop disco band Dschinghis Khan, known for their flamboyant costumes, unhinged dance routines, and platitudinous lyrics, released Moscow, a paean to the city of Moscow in all its historical and contemporary glory.

The song proclaims:

Moscow / City of mystery / So full of history…

Drinking vodka all night long / Keeps you happy, makes you strong / Ho ho ho ho ho – hey!

Take Natasha in your arms / You’ll be captured by her charms…

Moscow, Moscow, throw your glasses at the wall / And good fortune to us all / Ho ho ho ho ho – hey!

This accompanying performance is certainly one of the kitschiest ever caught on video.

In 1980 the song was released in an English-language version. Australia’s Channel 7, madly enough, used the song as the theme to their television coverage of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. It became a big hit in the country, staying at #1 for six weeks.

The beginning of this video is kind of awesome— but then it loses steam. Guess they didn’t have too much material in Russia to work with. Seems like they got off the plane, danced around a bit, and then were forced back home by racist and xenophobic ‘70s Russians.
