This penguin is not being mistreated or forced into indentured servitude. According to various sources, the family found him tangled in a fishing line with serious injuries, nursed him back to health, and he refused to leave after recuperating. Apparently, he makes trips to the fish market by himself, and is— or was— well known in the area. (King Penguins can live up to 30 or more years in captivity. He was estimated to be 10-14 at the time of the video, which was made in the late ‘90s or early oughts, so there’s a good chance that he’s alive and thriving.)

The beginning of this video is kind of awesome— but then it loses steam. Guess they didn’t have too much material in Russia to work with. Seems like they got off the plane, danced around a bit, and then were forced back home by the racist and xenophobic ‘70s Russians.
